The
West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial Fund was established
in 2002 to create a lasting Memorial to honor both Police Officers
and Firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty while
either serving the citizens of Cleveland’s West Park area
or while living in the community.
The Memorial itself is set in the Memorial Walkway along the west
side of Rocky River Drive. At it’s center is the Memorial,
a granite and bronze sculptor overlooking the scenic Metro Park.
Designed by local artist and sculptor Paula Blackmon it not only
represents the tremendous sacrifice made by these Police Officers
and Firefighters, but offers their families and the community a
gathering place to honor their memory.
In a joint effort the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association,
Firefighters Local 93, Federal, State, Local Government and Citizen
support this Memorial was made possible.
The Cleveland Heroes Run, a 5-mile and 2-mile Community
Race, was created to raise funds not only to make this
tribute possible, but to establish and fund an annual scholarship
for a family member of a West Park Police Officer and Firefighter
who’s name appears on the Memorial. Also, to show our appreciation
and support for the West Park community a scholarship will be given
each year to a local school in the name of one of the fallen Police
Officers and Firefighter.
In 2005 that goal was realized. With the help of the community
and the generosity of all the race sponsors we were able raise the
funds necessary to award our first scholarships.
The families of Patrolmen Frank Humr, William Greller and Detective
Robert Clark were honored on March 21, 2005 at Saint Joseph Academy.
We were also able to award a scholarship and plaque in honor of
those officers to Saint Joseph Academy to be used for their general
scholarship fund.
Sincerest thanks to everyone involved for helping to make this
lasting tribute possible.
